Make the Switch
If you are unaware about the events of the week, it has been a tough week at SCHS. Threats were made, and lead by our administration and law enforcement professionals our students, teachers, staff, and community responded with RESILIENCE. The administration modeled this for our students and staff and upon speaking to the students this week, they were well aware of the toughness demonstrated in the actions that were taken. It is good to be a Pacer!
We have had many players in grades 7-12 coming in at 6:30 AM to get extra skill development. We have to continue to work very hard to get our players as skilled as we possibly can. They have to be able to dribble, pass, and shoot. They have a very clear image of the things they want to be able to do in games but are lacking in the preparation necessary to be able to do those things. Guys that make shots in games have made countless shots on their own in preparation for that. 6:30 AM workouts are something that we will continue to do throughout the school year. After Spring Break it is my intention to have middle school practices for grades 6-8 once a week. I thought we thoroughly benefited from this in the fall. I also think this will help us maintain communication with these guys as we enter the Summer (IMPROVEMENT SEASON).
Book of the Week - Switch (How to Change Things When Change is Hard) by Chip & Dan Heath
I am about half way through this book and it has been a good follow up to what I read last week (Mindset). It gives some really good insights about directing change in groups of people. We are in a situation where we need to create some change in the basketball program to achieve the goals that we want to achieve for our young men. They need to find joy in hard work. The book uses the analogy of a Rider on an Elephant. The Rider is the analytical part of our psyche that thinks things through but is reluctant to act. The Elephant is our motivation. When the Elephant is motivated to go somewhere there is nothing that the Rider can do about it because the Elephant is an enormous animal. We have to find ways to appeal to the Riders and the Elephants of our players, parents, coaches, faculty to get the Elephants going in the right direction and create the change we want in our basketball program. We want to graduate tough and resilient, workers that will create the growth that they want in themselves.

I subscribe to Clint Hurdle's daily emails thanks to a recommendation from Coach McAlister. This particular email was very significant to me this week. I am certain that it was God's voice to me at a time when I needed (and asked) for him to speak to me. I share this in hopes that it speaks to you as well.
Quote of the Week
"Whether you live out your dreams or not, life is going to be a struggle" - Tony Robbins
Life is going to be a struggle no matter what, whether you try to cruise through life or relentlessly chase your dreams. There will always be struggle, we can count on that. It is a novel belief that, if it is going to be a struggle no matter what, you might as well struggle at living out your dreams! DREAM BIGGER THAN YOUR GUT. Make them outrageous!
Have a great week! Go Pacers!
