Have the Right Tools
We are getting ready to start another week. We had two more road games this week and dropped both of them. We have been on the road for 10 of our last 11 games. It has been quite a stretch and we have learned a lot throughout it. There is power in the process and it is important that we don't get bogged down in the results. At the end of the day, ARE WE GETTING BETTER? Our kids are practicing resilience and trying as hard as they can. Looking ahead we will be dealing with a couple of injuries now as well, with Dalton Tingle and Dallas Snider going down with ankle injuries last night at Milan. Our JV and Varsity teams have grown so much since the beginning of the year and I feel that they are beginning to grow exponentially now. Below is a video of what we call "positive touch", from last night. These situations are becoming more frequent and they are beginning to build each other up and work together to accomplish better play.
OUR program is getting better. WE (all of us youth coaches, parents, school employees, etc.) are doing the hard work that is required. I am excited to see how the remainder of this season is going to play out for us. I am confident that however it plays out, our kids are going to be better and ready to take the next steps for us to improve!
Tomorrow we are going to Laser Command in Madison for a team day. It should be a really good time. They have laser tag, ax throwing, and arcade games. I think the kids are excited about it.
We have our youth nights coming up when we finally make it back home. They are as follows:
February 8th - 7th/8th
February 15th - 3rd/4th
February 16th - 5th/6th
Each team will have some time on the floor at halftime of the varsity game. They will also sit behind the bench that night and will be a part of our introductions that night. The kids will get into the game for free on their night.
Book of the Week: "Tools for Titans" - Tim Ferris
This is a really cool book. Tim Ferris does a podcast where he interviews people that are successful in all kinds of fields. It is really interesting to read how these people interpret the world. It is broken into three categories, HEALTHY - WEALTHY - WISE, with experts in each field. I have only read about 110 pages of it. I try to read about a new person every day. It has made me evaluate the way I operate on a daily basis.
Podcast of the Week: Basketball Immersion: Episode 39 Randy Brown - Chris Oliver
If you click on the picture it will take you to Chris Oliver's website where you can listen to the podcast:
This episode has some great ideas about teaching the game of basketball. For example...using the concept of "tag" to teach kids how to cut and get open. What a simple analogy to teach kids how to get open. Everybody knows tag. When you play tag, you always step in the opposite direction of where you intend on going. He also talks about thinking about your language, do the kids understand what you are trying to impart to them? We are all teachers and we need to carefully evaluate how we are teaching? what we are teaching? etc. Are the kids getting it? Because if they don't, we are wasting our time.
Quote of the Week:
"CALM IS CONTAGIOUS"
When you are a leader, people are going to mimic your behavior, at a minimum...It's a guarantee. Please be sure you are modeling exceptional behavior. This is an enormous responsibility, but also a wonderful opportunity.
Thank you for everything you do. Have a great week!
God Bless!
